THE AKSHARA THEATRE was founded in 1972 by Gopal Sharman: playwright, poet, musician, theatre and te The Akshara Theatre is an exquisite arts complex set in the heart of New Delhi. It has four performance spaces for live performances equipped with lighting and sound equipment recently augmented by a generous grant from the Government of Japan under its Cultural Grassroots Programme. Read more It possesses a library, shooting and editing studios for television with the latest digital equipment, sound studios, workshops for set design, metal work and stone sculpture, as well as a studio for graphics design and classrooms where the performing arts are taught to children and young people. The Ramayana: The Ramayana, by Gopal Sharman, was first contracted by the Royal Shakespeare Company of Great Britain for its 1970 World Theatre Season. It has been performed more than 2000 times by Jalabala Vaidya in the traditional ‘katha’ style to rave reviews all over the world –including on Broadway in New York, at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, at the National Theatres of Canada and Finland, and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York where it received a standing ovation. Some Reviews: Raghava R. Menon, in the Hindustan Times, November 7, 1999, says: “The Akshara Ramayana needs a certain kind of guts to watch. This Ramayana challenges you to look at the meaning of the story from a brand new angle.
